THE A1 EXAM ABROAD

Your A1 exam, explained simply.

Three parts. One clear goal. Understand what you need to practise before taking the civic integration exam abroad.

01

What is the exam?

The basic civic integration exam abroad checks elementary Dutch and knowledge of Dutch society. The language level is A1. Check the IND rules first: exemptions and dispensations can apply.

02

Three parts to prepare for

Practise each part separately, then bring everything together.

  • Spreken: answer simple questions and complete short sentences.
  • Lezen: recognise words and understand short Dutch texts.
  • KNS: learn about everyday life and society in the Netherlands.
03

From preparation to exam day

Register with DUO, pay the exam fee, and then arrange your embassy appointment after payment confirmation. The current full-exam fee is €150, paid to DUO, separately from lessons.

04

Plan your application date too

DUO sends results within 8 weeks. After passing the whole exam, apply for your MVV within 1 year. Make the exam date part of your shared plan.

ONE SMALL NEXT STEP

You don’t need every answer to start learning.

Make a short list of your questions. Then separate your learning goals from anything that needs legal advice.
